The law protects the relationship between a client and their therapist. Information cannot be disclosed without written permission.
Exceptions To Confidentiality Include:
- Suspected child abuse/neglect and/or dependent adult or elder abuse, is required by law to be reported. In Maryland, suspected abuse is to be reported regardless of the amount of time that has elapsed and even if the perpetrator has moved to another state or has passed away.
- If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, the police and intended victim must be notified.
- If a client intends to harm him/herself, Jennifer will first make every effort to enlist the client's cooperation to ensure their safety. However, if the client does not cooperate, then all appropriate measures provided to Jennifer by law to ensure their safety will be taken.
- If the client is involved in a court case and Jennifer's records are subpoenaed then confidentialty may be broken.
