Yoga Nidra is a powerful form of meditation which allows for deep physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. In Yoga Nidra, one hovers in a state between sleep and wakefulness. In modern psychology, this is often referred to as being in a "hypnagogic state." Yoga Nidra is often referred to as "Psychic Sleep" because during this practice one is able to receive guidance from the subconscious mind. The guidance received during the practice of Yoga Nidra can assist individuals in finding the answers to their innermost problems in turn allowing for positive life changes to occur.
Many studies have been conducted (and are continuing to be conducted) on the health benefits of practicing Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra (as well as other forms of meditation) have been found to be highly effective in reducing anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia, headaches, chronic pain and in improving memory function.
Some studies have shown that Yoga Nidra may be helpful with asthma attacks, colitis, cancer treatment, coronary function, cholesterol levels, and hypertension symptoms. Yoga Nidra and other relaxation practices should never be used in place of traditional Western Medicine. But if used in conjunction with traditional medicine, studies show that Yoga Nidra can be highly beneficial.
